The 72nd Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best in film and television for 2014, were presented on January 11, 2015 and with it came the start of another red carpet season. Surprisingly, this year’s Golden Globes red carpet provided us with more of a vintage fashion and style.

The 1st Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best achievements in 1943 filmmaking, were held late in January 1944. Despite the hardships of WWII, fashion in the 1940s still ruled as women everywhere embraced a more utilitarian look and Hollywood’s Golden Age stars.

1st Golden Globe Award – Audrey Hepburn – The critics and the public alike were captivated by Audrey and her performance in Roman Holiday and she was feted with multiple awards. Miss H was the first actress to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for a single performance. This beautiful film set Miss H up for a series of great upcoming performances on the American screen.

We’re taking a look back at the icons who paved the way for the red carpet style setters of today.

Here are some highlights from the 1940s era from the key looks of the decade.

Brazilian Summer Days

Copacabana

Avenida Atlântica (Portuguese for Atlantic Avenue) is a major seaside avenue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Brasil).

Rio Beach 1940

Wonderful photograph Circa 1940’s showing three beachgoers enjoying the day in Rio de Janeiro.

Avenida Atlântica is lined with residential buildings, restaurants, hotels (including the Copacabana Palace) and a few shops.

It also has an iconic Portuguese pavement promenade with a wave pattern.

Vintage Fashion Expectations of the 1900s

Glamour girl from the 1950’s and pin up Betty Brosmer who had the amazing hourglass figure of: 38-18-36 (inches). Here she has the most tiny waist, I know a lot more clothes were handmade in the fifties, but wow it would be hard to dress to figure like that off the peg!

Betty Brosmer - Love for Pin Up

Per research it was the Victorians who first started a trend for tightlacing (or waist training) which is the art of seriously reducing waist size by cinching the waist with a corset. Corsets in the early Victorian era (1840s) were steel boned and girls often had to start wearing (and sleeping in) them from as young as 8 years old. However as the century progressed a movement towards ‘rational dress’ thankfully emerged and, as you can see, lots of these corsets adverts which range from  1870-1900 are advertised as ‘healthy’.
